Katharina Arndt:
Colouring book - modern ordnance
The „Colouring Book – modern ordnance“ by the artist Katharina Arndt presents 124 drawings of the very latest, modern, military equipment regarding such different areas as hand guns, helicopters, bombers, ships, aircraft carriers, submarines, knifes, grenades, mines, bombs, torpedos, missiles, cruise missiles, howitzers, satellites, combat robots, drones, off-road vehicles, HGVs and tanks. Ordnance that all nations need to wage their wars.
The pictures of the ordnance are displayed without names or captions - only the drawings to be coloured are given.
Although the form of military equipment mainly follows its function, the aesthetic appeal of some of the drawings is surprising. The graphic simplicity, contrasting the purpose and the function of the ordnance, invites colouring the drawn objects. Above all, one of the most malicious military inventions, the mine, is depicted in a beautiful and harmless way showing how much creativity was invested into formal diversity. In general, the great number of drawings show the variety of military inventiveness.
The fact that this military reality is taken for granted in each country is reflected in the choice of a children´s colouring book.
Up to now the „Colouring book- modern ordnance“ has only been displayed as a usable installation with pencils, a table and floor cushions in the showroom. From now on it is also available outside the art sphere as a limited and signed edition. |
